Olive struggles with both physical and psychological aftermath of the fire, including panic attacks, guilt, and feelings of abandonment. Throughout the story, she learns to face her fears and cope with the traumatic experience.

The relationship between Olive and Colin develops slowly and authentically as they both carry emotional burdens. They learn to trust and open up to each other, though their love is tested by the revelation of Colin's secret.

Both Olive and Colin must start anew at Dunbridge Academy - Olive in her old environment and Colin as an outsider. They discover the importance of friendship and solidarity in overcoming difficult times.
