Our relationship with technology has become habitual and compulsive. We constantly check our phones and visit apps without thinking. Companies design products to be habit-forming, altering our behavior through persuasive techniques. The author researched this phenomenon to understand how successful companies create habits. He found they manufacture desire by guiding users through four phases called hooks - triggers that spark action, actions that provide reward, variable rewards that increase desire, and investments that increase commitment. Consecutive hook cycles result in unprompted engagement. The author developed the Hook Model framework after studying successful companies, consulting for Silicon Valley firms, teaching classes on influencing behavior, and refining ideas through writing. He found hooks everywhere, not just in tech. This book explores the four steps of the Hook Model to explain how companies form habits that bring users back repeatedly.
