Imagine you're someone who believes they're good at reading. You've been reading since you were a child, and you've always done well in school. But then, you're asked to teach a course on classic literature. Suddenly, you realize that you don't understand these books as well as you thought. You're not able to analyze them properly. This is what happened to me. It made me realize that many of us, including students, only memorize enough to pass exams, without truly understanding what we read.

In an attempt to still teach the course, I turned to secondary sources. However, a colleague's insightful questions revealed my lack of deep understanding of the texts. I also had some challenging students who questioned me, further highlighting my limitations.

In the world of readers, there are extremes: those who don't read at all and those who are experts. But most of us fall somewhere in the middle. We're average readers. Schools teach us the basics of reading, but they often fail to equip us with the skills to truly comprehend what we read. I believe that we can all learn to read better, but it requires effort and time.

You might think you read well enough, but it's only when you try to teach reading that you realize how challenging it is to read skillfully. I've been teaching reading skills for years, and I still discover new insights every time I reread a book. The quest for perfect reading might always be out of reach.

I believe that inadequate schooling has left many of us unable to fully enjoy and benefit from reading. However, learning doesn't stop when school ends. We can all choose to improve our reading skills. My goal is to provide a method for average readers to enhance their reading abilities.
